Day light savings is just behind us and it’s easy to say that spring has sprung!!

It’s October and the fishing in the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland is in prime condition. The workups in the gulf are active and flourishing and both dolphins and whales can be seen feeding heavily with the birds diving in to take advantage of the abundance of pilchards, leaving a trail of debris in the water for all fish to feed on.

These workups make for some incredibly fast fishing, with the opportunity to fill up a bin in under an hour. Not only are big snapper plentiful at this time, but other species are also feeding heavily on the bait fish. Now is the perfect time to try your luck at landing a trophy fish, as they move into the gulf in large numbers in preparation for spawning once the water reaches the right temperature.

Kingfish, in particular, are appearing in good numbers at popular spots, and the ones being caught are in excellent condition thanks to the extra fat they’ve gained during the winter months.

It’s a truly magical time to be out on the water in the Hauraki Gulf.
